About the event
The assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, occurred on the evening of April 14, 1865, and is one of the most significant events in American history. Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer, at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.
On the night of the assassination, Lincoln was attending a performance of the play "Our American Cousin." Booth, who had planned the attack meticulously, entered the presidential box and shot Lincoln in the back of the head. He then jumped onto the stage and fled the theater.
Lincoln was carried across the street to the Petersen House, where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning, April 15, 1865. His death marked the first assassination of a U.S. president and sent shockwaves throughout the nation. After the assassination, Booth fled the city and was pursued by federal authorities.
